About Canasta101
I learned Canasta around the family table. Some of my earliest memories of the game are playing with my grandma, my dad, and a big extended family that turned Canasta into regular family tournaments.
The cards were only part of it. The real tradition was everybody gathering around the same table, telling stories, competing, laughing, and teaching the next person how to play.
I’m Matt, and those memories are why I built Canasta101. I wanted to make it easier for other families and friends to learn the game, settle the most common rule questions, keep score, and start traditions of their own.
HOW WE PLAY
The Canasta101 way
Canasta has been passed from table to table for generations, so different families naturally play with different house rules. Canasta101 focuses on Modern American Canasta and the rules our family has used for years. I don’t pretend that every table plays exactly the same way. When a rule can vary, I try to say so clearly and explain how we play it.
Much of the site was originally written from memory and personal experience. That is part of its character, and it is also why I continue to review, clarify, and improve the material as the site grows.
